UK Healthcare: The Effects of Absenteeism and Presenteeism in the Workplace

Absenteeism and presenteeism are two factors that can have major consequences on the finances of British businesses; significant health issues in the workplace can have a direct effect on performance and productivity.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) revealed in its annual report that the average annual cost of absence to businesses is £692 per employee¹.

While the effects of employee absenteeism on businesses are well documented, one issue that is not addressed as much is that of presenteeism; where employees actually attend work, but due to health issues, are unable to perform their duties to the required standard.

Research by PriceWaterhouseCoopers² suggests that presenteeism could cost employers up to seven times more per employee per year, based on the CIPD figures this puts the figure just under £5,000 per affected employee per annum.

As a result of rising absenteeism and presenteeism levels, more and more businesses are beginning to invest in group healthcare policies for their employees. A report by the European Network for Health Promotion³suggests that, for every 80p spent by an organisation of health promotion and intervention programmes, around £4 could be saved by the business.

Wellness programmes help to improve business turnover as they help reduce absenteeism and presenteeism, save money on temporary cover staff, and in turn improve morale and motivation in the office.

If you are looking for affordable, everyday business healthcare cover, designed to help your company enhance its performance, then look no further than UK Healthcare.

A subsidiary of Bolton and District Hospital Saturday Council, UK Healthcare Limited provide affordable healthcare solutions for both individuals and companies. With the UK Healthcare cash plan, policyholders can claim back expenses paid at the pharmacy, dentist and opticians, as well as being covered for consultant referrals and hospital stays up to policy limits.

Preventing slips on snow and ice

Cold mornings, frost and the possibility of snow all come with UK winter months. Last year we saw parts of the UK come to a standstill when heavy snow fall and ice made roads unsafe to use and pavements too dangerous to set foot on.

When it comes to health & safety whose responsibility is it to reduce the risks brought by snow and ice?

The Approved Code of Practice to the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations, relating to traffic routes and pedestrian walkways, states: -

"Arrangements should be made to minimise risks from snow and ice. This may involve gritting, snow clearing and closure of some routes, particularly outside stairs, ladders and walkways on roofs".

Therefore, organisations should minimise injury from slips on snow and ice by taking the following steps: -

Planning

  • identify the external areas of your premises where slippery conditions are most likely to occur for both vehicles and pedestrians, e.g. on path-ways, car parks, access roads, steps, sloped surfaces, unofficial routes regularly used as short-cuts
  • monitor local weather forecasts to anticipate poor weather conditions
  • keep a stock of gritting material for your premises and suitable equipment to carry out the gritting process
  • where staff work out doors, make sure they have suitable footwear to reduce the risk of slipping
  • where practicable, prevent access to non-essential areas where there is a higher risk of slipping and designate safer alternative routes for vehicles and pedestrians, e.g. use of barriers, cones and signs
  • enforce low speed limits to reduce the risk of vehicles skidding
  • provide adequate segregation between vehicles and pedestrians.

Remember, it is important to clear areas of snow and ice leading from external fire exit doors/stairs for people to use safely in an emergency.

Prevention/treatment of icy surfaces

The most common method to prevent external surfaces becoming icy is to apply rock salt early at night before a frost. This technique can be used even at very low temperatures.

Alternatively, snow or ice can be melted by applying rock salt directly after a snow fall or ice formation. However, fresh or compacted snow should be cleared before treating surfaces, in order to enable the rock salt to work most effectively. Ensure the snow removed does not create a risk elsewhere or block drainage channels.

Gritting should not be carried out during heavy rain as this will wash the rock salt away.

Rock salt is not expensive and can be obtained from most builders merchants. Where supplies of rock salt are not available then consider other sources of materials, e.g. grit, table salt.

JMC Managing Director to Compete in 24-Hour Strathpuffer Mountain Bike Race for Help for Heroes

Andrew Burgess, managing director of IT support partner JMC, is preparing to compete in the 2011 Strathpuffer mountain bike race in order to raise money for Help for Heroes.

This extreme 24hr event, held just north of Inverness in Scotland, is open to solo riders, duos and teams of four, and annually attracts around 450 competitors from all over the world.

Andrew is no stranger to the gruelling Strathpuffer circuit, having entered the 2010 race as a duo with another rider. As part of Team JMC Andrew and his partner finished 4th having completed 23 laps of the circuit in just under 24hrs. This year however, Andrew will be taking on the ultimate challenge of racing in the gruelling event as a solo rider, with the target of raising £2,000 for Help for Heroes.

Andrew commented: “Whilst I have a fair amount of experience of racing mountain bikes I have stepped well outside my comfort zone by entering this year’s event solo! Riding for the best part of 24hrs is tough but snow, ice, freezing conditions, a challenging course with lots of climbing and some heart in the mouth descents, plus 17hrs of darkness means this is my toughest event yet. What will keep me going though is knowing that my efforts will raise a substantial amount of money for an awesome charity. All donations are greatly appreciated.”

The sixth annual Strathpuffer race will take place on 15th and 16th January 2011. Andrew has set up a fundraising website for his Strathpuffer race, where donations big or small can be made: http://www.justgiving.com/Team-JMC-Budge/.

UK Healthcare: Advice on How to Tackle Stress in the Workplace on National Stress Awareness Day

This week, on 3rd November, is the 12th annual National Stress Awareness Day in Britain, with companies and organisations across the country set to mark the day with events and stress awareness campaigns.

According to a recent survey1, stress levels in Britain have doubled in the last four years, so it has never been more important to address the issue of stress, particularly amongst employees in the workplace.

According to the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS), which promotes employment relations and HR excellence, stress in the workplace can have many different triggers. For example, a change in the working environment can lead to insecurity or additional responsibilities can put too much pressure on employees and make them anxious about whether they can live up to expectations.

The theme of the 2010 National Stress Awareness Day is “Start Living – Stop Stressing”, and as part of their commitment to this year’s event, here are a list of useful hints and tips of how you can tackle incidences of stress in your workplace3:

• Make sure your employees understand what they have to do, and how they have to do it. Keep them informed about what is going on within the company, and plan ahead so that any changes can be clearly signposted, and all employees are prepared for it.
• Consult your employees about important decisions and prospective changes within the company, so as to give them an input and enable them to work with you to solve problems. Consider ways in which to make employees’ demands more manageable, such as flexible working hours.
• Carry out a thorough induction with new employees, with a checklist of all the important thing they need to know. Provide them with a written statement of the particulars of their employment, make sure their job descriptions are clear and concise, and be prepared to meet their training needs.
• Have clear procedures for handling misconduct and poor performance, and for employees to raise grievances. Tackle all incidences of bullying and harassment, and make it perfectly clear that such behaviour will not be tolerated in your workplace.
• Review your employees’ performances regularly, in order to identify their strengths and weaknesses. Build effective teams within your employee base, awarding each team its own set of responsibilities, while at the same time maintaining a close link between individual objectives and company goals.

Mental distress and ill health affect every organisation in Britain. At any one time, one worker in six will be experiencing depression, anxiety or problems relating to stress, costing the UK economy £26 billion each year2. In order to keep your employees healthy and motivated, it pays to take care of their health interests. A corporate cash plan from UK Healthcare is an affordable solution that can easily be introduced across the workforce. With a 24-hour confidential counselling helpline included within the plan this can help form part of an employee assistance programme (EAP) for the prevention and early identification of problems.

A subsidiary of Bolton and District Hospital Saturday Council, UK Healthcare Limited provide affordable healthcare insurance for companies from £1 per employee per week. With a UK Healthcare cash plan, costs incurred by a visit to the pharmacy, dentist or opticians, as well as cover for consultant referrals and hospital stays can be claimed back up to policy limits.

Ensure your Care Home meets the new essential standards under the Care Quality Commission

From today, 1st October 2010 under the Health and Social Care Act 2008, all providers of adult social care that carry out regulated activities must be registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Providers are legally responsible for making sure they meet the new essential standards of quality and safety.

Over the past year, 34 care homes and 8 agencies providing care in people’s homes have been shut down by the CQC. The regulator is determined to take strong measures in order to protect the elderly and vulnerable. Should care providers meet the essential standards they will be monitored by the regulator to ensure they continue to do so.

Damian Wasey, Account Development Manager at Citation said “It is now even more pertinent for care providers to make sure they are meeting all the necessary legal requirements when it comes to health & safety and employment law. Of the care homes closed over the last 12 months, the regulator highlighted two reoccurring concern’s, medicines not being managed safely and staff not legally able to work in the country.  We make sure that care home providers know all their legal requirements and provide systems to enable them to comply, removing the burden whilst leaving owners to focus on providing an optimum level of care for service users.”

With the CQC currently reviewing and defining the new information system on quality and safety and how this will be measured, care home providers must do their upmost to deliver the highest level of care in terms of both quality and safety for future success.

Citation’s compliance solutions in employment law and health & safety provide care home providers with 24/7 advice and ongoing support enabling employers to easily demonstrate they have followed the necessary procedures.

A home improvement company has been fined for breaching health and safety laws after one of their workers was spotted working on the roof of a house with nothing to prevent him falling off.

The Northwest Company pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 6(3) of the Work at Height Regulations 2005, by failing to take sufficient measures to prevent a fall from a roof.

EU plans to change maternity rights could cost SMEs dearly

UK businesses could be hit with a £2.5 bn annual bill under the recent EU plans to change maternity rights.

The scheme which is due to be voted on in October, would mean employers would be required to pay new mothers 20 weeks full pay. This would almost treble the cost of maternity pay paid by UK businesses.

Women on maternity leave within the UK currently receive the first 6 weeks at 90% pay followed by 33 weeks on £124.88 a week. The increase in payments would hit small to medium sized business dearly, particularly when trading conditions are still tough.

Andrea O’Hare, Head of Personnel & Employment Law at Citation, says “This proposal could lead to a rise in discrimination in the workplace towards women of a particular child bearing age. Employers may choose against such candidates when recruiting because of the additional financial costs they would incur should the woman fall pregnant.”

Citation ensures its clients are updated should any changes in legislation (such as the EU changes to maternity rights) take place ensuring they are meeting the necessary legal requirements. Citation’s employment law compliance solutions provide SMEs with 24/7 advice relating to any issue and provide ongoing support to deal with issues they face.

TV Digital Switchover Underway in STV North Region

Britain is continuing the process of switching from analogue TV signals to digital, with the switchover currently in progress in the Scottish broadcasting region STV North which covers some of the most remote areas of the British Isles, including the Shetland Islands and the Great Glen.

The switchover began in the region in early May, and has already been completed by the Bressay and Keelyland Hill transmitter groups, which serve the Shetlands and Orkney Islands respectively.

The process is currently underway in the Rumster Forest regions, and will begin with the Eitshal regions. It is expected that the switchover will be fully completed in the STV North region before the end of the year.

The digital switchover began in Britain in 2007, and the government aims to have the country’s analogue signal completely switched off by 2012. The switchover process involves replacing the analogue channels with free-to-air digital TV and radio services, i.e. Freeview.

Around 20 per cent of Britain has already been converted to the digital TV signal; north-west England, Wales, the West Country and the Border region. The other regions in England and Wales, as well as in Scotland and Northern Ireland, will be switched over to the digital signal by the end of 2012.

The digital switchover is arguably the biggest technological project currently running in the UK, and in many areas the switchover has been aided by the work of SCC International.

SCC International has been an established leader in the TV systems and commercial satellite industry since its incorporation in 1993. They provide a number of multimedia solutions for both homes and businesses, including installation and maintenance of hotel TV systems, IPTV installations, satellite uplink services, web casting, programme production and network roll-outs.

SCC International: TV Digital Switchover Campaign Set to Save Over £50million

The ongoing campaign to switch British TV signals to digital is running so smoothly that the scheme is set to generate a multi-million pound surplus.

It was announced last month that around £55million of funding is set to be handed back to the Government once the digital switchover is completed in two years’ time.

It is thought that the leftover funding will be re-assigned to the roll-out of broadband internet connections in rural areas.

The digital switchover began in Britain in 2007, and the government aims to have the country’s analogue signal completely switched off by 2012. The switchover process involves replacing the analogue channels with free-to-air digital TV and radio services, i.e. Freeview.

Watch the New Premier League Season in 3D with Help from SCC International

The World Cup may have ended in disappointment for England, but football fans can console themselves with the fact that the domestic football season is now upon us. The 2010/2011 Premier League is set to be one of the biggest yet, and fans will be able to see all the action in 3D as Sky Sports officially launches its brand new 3D channel this summer.

The first Premiership football match to be shown in 3D was Arsenal’s clash with Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium back in January. This “test” screening proved to be a massive success, and as a result Sky Sports began a roll-out of the 3D TV service in tens of thousands of pubs, restaurants and hotels across Britain back in April.

Sky will continue their 3D revolution this summer by launching the Sky Sports 3D channel, which will not only broadcast Premier League football matches, but also a number of other sports covered by the company, including rugby and cricket.

3D football is set to take Britain by storm in the next twelve months, so it’s best to have your 3D facilities installed in good time before the start of the new football season to fully take advantage of its benefits. Satellite communications company SCC International can install the 3D TV service in your public establishment with the greatest of ease.

As well as the introduction of 3D TV, SCC International are also involved in a number of high-profile TV and satellite projects, including the continuing Digital Switchover in Britain. The company also provide installations of integrated reception systems and IPTV. For more information about SCC International and the services they provide, including 3D television installation, visit the SCCI website at http://www.scci.co.uk/.

British Companies Failing to Protect Employees' Eyesight

A recent survey amongst HR departments across Britain has found that up to 90 per cent of businesses are failing to meet the legal obligations to protect the eyesight of their staff.

According to figures published by the Eyecare Trust, one in ten British companies does not have any form of eye care policy in place for their employees.

Alastair Hall, Head of Health & Safety at Citation said “Businesses have 6 key obligations relating to eye care, including, regular eye tests, proper analysis of work stations, and short screen breaks throughout the day. We often find that employers are unaware of the provisions they should make for employees around eye care regulations”
